Terms used:

Base Value

Every Element (i.e. required element of the short program or element of the well balanced free skating program) has a certain Base Value indicated in the Scale of Values (SOV) chart published by the ISU and Skate Canada.

Basic Position

Refers to the three basic spin positions – camel, sit and upright.

Basic Positions

Refers to the three basic spin positions – camel, sit and upright.

Camel Position

Singles and Pairs: A basic spin position with the free leg backwards with the knee higher than the hip level, however Layback and Biellmann are still considered as upright positions.

Ice Dance: Performed on one foot with skating leg straight or slightly bent and body bent forward and free leg extended or bent upward on a horizontal line or higher.

Choreographic Sequence

Consists of any kind of movements like steps, turns, spirals, arabesques, spread eagles, Ina Bauers, hydroblading, any jumps with maximum of 2 revolutions, spins, etc. Listed elements included in the Choreographic Sequence will not be called and will not occupy a box. The pattern is not restricted, but the sequence must be clearly visible.

Edge

May refer either to part of the skate blade, or the visible tracing of a skate blade on one foot that is on one curve. An edge may be either inside (towards the body) or outside (away from the body), and forward or backward, for a total for four different edges. A "deep edge" is a deep lean on the edge of the skate. Deep edges are rewarded, while skating on a "flat" (on both edges at the same time) is discouraged.

Element

A component that is part of a synchronized skating short program and free skating program.  Elements are divided into groups of difficulty.

Event

The name given to a group of skaters entered in a category.  There may be one event per category or several events per category depending on the number of total entries.  Each event is independent of the other events within the category.

Fall

Defined as a loss of control by a skater with the result that the majority of his/her own body weight is on the ice being supported by any other part of the body other than the blades. e.g. hand(s), knee(s), back, buttock(s) or any part of the arm.

Flat

The visible double tracing of a skate that is straight (imprinted by the skater skating on one foot on both edges of the blade).

Flying Spin

Novice and lower and STAR:

Spins that enter with a jump and land in a spinning position. The spin may have a change of foot or a change of position or both. Examples: flying sit spin (FSp), flying change sit spin (FCSSp), flying camel spin (FCSp), flying change camel spin (FCCSp), flying upright spin (FUSp), flying change upright spin (FCUSp), flying combination spin (FCoSp), flying change combination spin (FCCoSp).

ISU definitions for Junior and Senior:

Flying spin: A spin with a flying entrance with no change of foot or position.  The name of the flying spin corresponds to its landing position: flying sit spin (FSSP), flying camel spin (FCSp), flying upright spin (FUSp), flying layback spin (FLSp). This definition is very specific for junior and senior short programs.

Spin with a flying entrance: This is the ISU definition for all flying spins that are not ‘flying spins’ as defined above.

Grade of Execution

International Skating Union

The International Skating Union (ISU) is the exclusive international sport federation recognized by the International Olympic Committee administering the sports of Figure Skating and Speed Skating throughout the world. The ISU is composed of a number of national associations called ISU Members that administer ISU sports at the national level and recognize that all international matters are under the sole jurisdiction and control of the ISU.

Interruption

The time elapsed between the moment a skater stops performing the program until the moment the skater resumes performing the program.

Interruptions

The time elapsed between the moment a skater stops performing the program until the moment the skater resumes performing the program.

Judge

An individual sixteen years of age or older who has been trained and appointed to officiate at or below a specified level of competition in one or more of singles, pairs, ice dance or synchronized skating.

Judges

An individual sixteen years of age or older who has been trained and appointed to officiate at or below a specified level of competition in one or more of singles, pairs, ice dance or synchronized skating.

Jump Combination

Singles and Pairs: Two or more jumps in which the landing foot of the first jump is the take-off foot of the next jump and so on. There is no change of foot or turn between the jumps, although the toe may be used to assist the take-off. One full revolution on the ice between the jumps (free foot can touch the ice, but no weight transfer) keeps the element within the definition of a jump combination.

Synchronized Skating: Any number of jumps of at least one revolution that may be linked with turns, steps or with a slight touch down.

Jump Combinations

Singles and Pairs: Two or more jumps in which the landing foot of the first jump is the take-off foot of the next jump and so on. There is no change of foot or turn between the jumps, although the toe may be used to assist the take-off. One full revolution on the ice between the jumps (free foot can touch the ice, but no weight transfer) keeps the element within the definition of a jump combination.

Synchronized Skating: Any number of jumps of at least one revolution that may be linked with turns, steps or with a slight touch down.

Jump Element

An individual jump, a jump combination or a jump sequence. In some jumps, the toe of the free foot is used during the take-off phase. The number of rotations is based on the direction of travel of the take-off and landing edges. In ice dance a jump cannot be more than one revolution, and may be executed by only one partner at a time. This jump may be performed either in hold or separated.  Both partners may jump at the same time.

Jump Elements

In ice dance a jump cannot be more than one revolution, and may be executed by only one partner at a time. This jump may be performed either in hold or separated.  Both partners may jump at the same time.

Loop

A one-foot movement where the skater skates an oval pattern using the same edge. The entry and exit of the loop must cross. The loop must be clean cut without scrapes or points

Mohawk

A turn from one foot to the other in which the entry and exit curves are continuous and of equal depth. The change of foot is from an outside edge to an outside edge or from and inside edge to an inside edge.

Referee

A referee of an event within a competition is an experienced judge who has received further training to conduct an event and monitor the performance of the panel of judges. Referees are qualified to referee or judge at or below a specified level of competition in one or more of singles, pairs, ice dance or synchronized skating.

Sequence

The set order of the prescribed steps that compose one pattern (sequence) of a Pattern Dance.

Sequences

The set order of the prescribed steps that compose one pattern (sequence) of a Pattern Dance.

Sit Position

Singles and Pairs: A basic spin position with the upper part of the skating leg at least parallel to the ice.

Ice Dance: A basic spin position performed on one foot with skating leg bent in a one-legged crouch position and free leg forward, to the side or back.

Spin

In singles and pairs, a spin must have at least three revolutions to be considered a spin. The minimum number of revolutions in a position is two without interruption.  If this requirement is not fulfilled, the position is not counted. The change of foot in any spin must be preceded and followed by a spin position with at least three (3) revolutions. If one foot is lacking three revolutions in a basic position, the spin will receive less value. If the skater(s) falls when entering a spin, a spin or a spinning movement is allowed immediately after this fall (for filling time purpose) with this spin/movement not being counted as an element.

Spin In One Position

In singles and pairs, any spin which has only one of the three basic positions and no non-basic positions.  In spins in one position and flying spins in one position, the concluding upright position at the end of the spin is not considered to be another position independent of the number of revolutions, as long as the skater is executing only the final wind-up without any enhancements.

Spins

In singles and pairs, a spin must have at least three revolutions to be considered a spin. The minimum number of revolutions in a position is two without interruption.  If this requirement is not fulfilled, the position is not counted. The change of foot in any spin must be preceded and followed by a spin position with at least three (3) revolutions. If one foot is lacking three revolutions in a basic position, the spin will receive less value. If the skater(s) falls when entering a spin, a spin or a spinning movement is allowed immediately after this fall (for filling time purpose) with this spin/movement not being counted as an element.

Spiral

A gliding position executed on one foot with free leg extended (including knee and foot) above hip level.

Spiral Sequence

A collection of at least two spirals executed on different feet, separated by no more than four steps (eight steps for STAR 2) not including the step taken into the skating foot of the second spiral.  (A step in this case applies to any time a change of foot takes place, e.g. Mohawk = 2 steps, 3-turn = 1 step, crosscut = 2 steps). Some categories have requirements for supported/unsupported and/or direction of spirals.

Spirals

A gliding position executed on one foot with free leg extended (including knee and foot) above hip level.

Step

The visible tracing on the ice that is executed on one foot. A step is counted each time there is a change of foot.

Steps

The visible tracing on the ice that is executed on one foot. A step is counted each time there is a change of foot.

Turns

A rotational movement in which the skater moves from forward to backward or backward to forward using one foot and on an edge and axis (e.g. Three-turn, Bracket). In a two-foot turn the rotational movement from forward to backward or backward to forward is from one foot to the other foot (e.g. Mohawk, Choctaw).

19. Choreographic Sequence & Step Sequence

19.1. (Juvenile to Novice)

ISU Communication No. 2089 (May 11, 2017) contains the Updated Guidelines in Establishing GOE for Errors and Updated Guidelines for marking +GOE (positive aspects) for Choreographic Sequence and Step Sequence.

19.2. Choreographic Sequence

A choreographic sequence consists of any kind of movements like steps, turns, spirals, arabesques, spread eagles, Ina Bauers, hydroblading, any jumps with maximum of 2 revolutions, spins, small lifts etc. Listed elements included in the Choreographic Sequence will not be called and will not occupy a box. The pattern is not restricted, but the sequence must be clearly visible. The Technical Panel identifies the choreographic sequence, which commences with the first skating movement and is concluded with the preparation to the next element (if the choreographic sequence is not the last element of the program).

19.3. Step Sequence (For all categories where the Step Sequence is called no higher than Level Base – e.g. Juvenile Singles)

A good Step Sequence will almost fully utilize the ice surface. However, in order to be identified as a Step Sequence, it must cover at least half of the ice surface.

Listed jumps may not be included. There is no specific pattern and short stops in accordance with the music are permitted. The Step Sequence should be executed according to the character of the music. Attention should be paid to energy and execution of the step sequence with an emphasis on the quality of steps, turns and body movements rather than difficulty and quantity.

Judges will reward Step Sequences that are matched to the musical structure and are effortless throughout.

19.4. Spiral Sequence (Pre-Juvenile)

A collection of at least two spirals executed on different feet, separated by no more than four steps not including the step taken into the skating foot of the second spiral. (A step in this case applies to any time a change of foot takes place (e.g. Mohawk = 2 steps, 3-turn = 1 step, crosscut = 2 steps).

Spiral: A gliding position executed on one foot with free leg extended (including knee and foot) above hip level.

  • If there is not at least one spiral with an unsupported position, the element will be called No Level
  • A spiral sequence meeting the definition of the spiral sequence will receive a Base Level call.
  • The first two spirals performed that meet the definition will be identified as a spiral sequence.
  • If there is not at least one spiral with a sustained position (i.e., not kicked) on each foot then the element will be called "No Level" by the technical panel.
  • If one or both of the two required spirals is so short that the edge is not well-established or the position is not held long enough to be evaluated, the judge may assess a GOE penalty according to "poor position" and/or "poor edge", as applicable.
  • In the case of a pair team, both partners must perform spirals meeting the spiral sequence definition.
  • To be identified as a spiral, the free leg (including knee and foot) must be above hip level, but there can be a bend in the free leg and/or skating leg. Positions like a Biellmann style and a “Y” with the free leg to the side are permitted.
  • The quality of the spiral will be evaluated by the judges including a possible GOE reduction for poor edge quality. If one or both of the spirals is on a flat, the spiral can still be called Level B and the judges will reflect the lack of edge in the GOE.
  • “No more than 4 steps between”: A step in this case applies to any time a skater executes a clear change of foot. If a skater puts weight on both feet as in a sculling movement or pumping with both feet, the Technical Panel will count these movements as a “step”. If there are more than four steps, not including the step taken into the second spiral, the Spiral Sequence will be given “No Value”.
Guidelines for establishing +GOEs - SpSq
For +1: 2 bullets / For +2: 4 bullets / For +3: 6 or more bullets
Good flow, energy and execution
Good speed during sequence
Good body line and full extension in both spirals for 3 or more seconds each
Good flexibility
Creativity and originality
Ability to attain positions and variations quickly and effortlessly
Reflecting concept/character of the program
Element enhances musical structure

Guidelines for establishing GOE reductions for errors - SpSq
Fall -3
Poor Position -1 to -3
Stumble -1 to -2
Poor edge quality -1 to -2
Does not conform to the music -1 to -2
One or both spirals not held for a minimum of 3 seconds -1 to -3

2016 ISU Special Regulations & Technical Rules - Single, Pair Skating and Ice Dance

ISU Rule 503 - Falls and Interruptions

  1. A Fall is defined as loss of control by a Skater with the result that the majority of his/her own body weight is on the ice supported by any other part of the body other than the blades e.g. hand(s), knee(s), back, buttock(s) or any part of the arm.
  2. An Interruption is defined as the time elapsed between the moment a Skater stops performing the program until the moment he resumes performing the program. For every Interruption of more than ten (10) seconds, there shall be a deduction (see Rule 353, paragraph 1.n.). If an Interruption lasts more than forty (40) seconds, an acoustic signal is produced by the Referee and the Skater/Pair/ Couple is withdrawn. For cases of interruption due to adverse conditions unrelated to the Skater or related to the Skater’s health or equipment, see Rule 515.
