Part 2: Standards and Diagrams - Preliminary

PRELIMINARY WALTZING THREES - STANDARDS

Opening Steps: 2 (3 beats each)

1st Side:

Two repetitions of:
1 RFO Three Turn (6 beats)
1 LFO Edge (3 beats)
1 RFI Three Turn (6 beats)
1 LFI Edge (3 beats)

  • Each lobe has a transition step and a three turn. Lobes should be round. The curve of the lobe is created by the three turn. The transition step may be quite shallow.
  • Correct edges are required in the turns.
  • The size of the pattern is determined by rink size and strength of the skater.
  • A smaller pattern with strong lobes is acceptable.
  • Power should be generated from the blade (i.e. edge) as opposed to the toe pick in 75% of the pushes.
  • Free leg extension is required on the execution of each push.

1st End:

1 RFO/LFI Crosscut (6 beats)
1 RFI Three Turn (6 beats)
2 Forward Edges (3 beats each)

  • Edges should be assessed by the depth of the lobes.

2nd Side:

Two repetitions of:
1 LFI Three Turn (6 beats)
1 RFI Edge (3 beats)
1 LFO Three Turn (6 beats)
1 RFO Edge (3 beats)

  • Strong lobes created by the three turns are the requirement.

2nd End:

1 XF-LFI Edge (3 beats)
1 RFO Edge (3 beats)
1 LFO Three Turn (6 beats)
2 Backward Outside Edges (3 beats each)
1 RFO/LFI Crosscut (6 beats)

  • Edges should be assessed by the depth of the lobes.

Concluding Steps:

2 Arabesque positions (6 beats each)
1 RFI Side Stop (3 beats) (left toe trails on the ice)

  • Arabesque positions should demonstrate:
    • Head up
    • Free leg extended and turned out
    • Arms extended (shoulder level).

Note:

  • Musicality/Pacing is difficult for skaters at this level due to the slow tempo.
  • 8 out of 10 three turns must be clean.

PRELIMINARY WALTZING MOHAWKS - STANDARDS

Opening Steps: 2 (3 beats each)

1st Side:

Three repetitions of:
1 RFI/LBI Mohawk (3 beats)
1 RBO Edge (3 beats)
1 LBO/RBI Crosscut (3 beats)
1 LFO Edge (3 beats)

  • A strong lobe must be created by the mohawk and the backward outside edge. Conversely, the forward outside edge may be quite shallow, flattened or even inside on this step. Strong FO edges should be rewarded.
  • Wide pushing should be evident throughout the exercise.
  • Power from the blade is a requirement in 75% of the pushes.
  • Agility in the turns and transitions should be evident.
  • The side section utilizes 6 measures of music.

1st End:

1 RFI/LBI Mohawk (3 beats)
1 RBO Edge (3 beats)
1 LBO/RBI Crosscut (3 beats)
2 LFO/RFI Crosscut (9 beats)

  • Edges and power are required but the lobes will be shallow.
  • The end section utilizes 6 measures of music which maintains the quick pace of the exercise.

2nd Side + 2nd End:

Four repetitions of:
1 LFI/RBI Mohawk (3 beats)
1 LBO Edge (3 beats)
1 RBO/LBI Crosscut (3 beats)
1 RFO Edge (RFI edge in 3rd and 4th repetitions) (3 beats)

  • Edges, power and agility are required.

Concluding Steps:

2 Forward Spirals (6 beats each)
1 Two-Foot Side Stop (3 beats)

  • Spirals should demonstrate:
    • Head up
    • Free leg parallel with free hip or higher
    • Arms extended
    • Back arched
    • Free leg and skating leg fully extended

Note:

  • Musicality/Pacing is difficult for skaters at this level due to the fast tempo.
  • Skaters who demonstrate Musicality/Pacing should be rewarded.

PRELIMINARY CIRCLES - STANDARDS

Each forward outside option contains:

2 Forward Crosscuts (4 beats each)
1 Forward Sustained Edge (12 beats)
1 Two-Foot Side Stop (4 beats)

Each forward inside option contains:

1 Opening Step (2 beats)
1 Forward Crosscut (4 beats)
1 FO Edge (2 beats)
1 Forward Sustained Edge (12 beats)
1 Two-Foot Side Step (4 beats)

Each backward outside option contains:

2 Opening Steps (2 beats each)
1 Forward Three Turn (4 beats)
1 Backward Sustained Edge (12 beats)
1 T Stop (4 beats)

Each backward inside option contains:

1 Forward Crosscut (4 beats)
1 Forward Three Turn (4 beats)
1 Backward Sustained Edge (12 beats)
1 T Stop (4 beats)

Sustained Edges must demonstrate:

  • Edge quality (Backward edges are more difficult at this level. A performance level below that of the forward edges is satisfactory.)
  • Flow
  • Strong lean
  • Extended arms and free leg
  • Head up
  • Musicality (3 measures of music)
  • Power from the blade in 75% of the pushes.

Note:

  • The circle size should be approximately three times the height of the skater.
  • Sustained edges (backward and forward) must cover at least ¾ of the circumference of the circle.
  • Only one exercise to be performed on the test.
