1.0 MARKING SINGLES ONE-BY-ONE EVENTS


1.1 MARKING OF THE SINGLES SHORT PROGRAM

In single short programs two marks are awarded. The first mark for “Required Elements”, the second for the “Presentation” of the program.

 

  1. REQUIRED ELEMENTS: In marking the “Required Elements” the following must be considered:
    1. JUMPS: The height, length, technique and the clean starting and landing of the required jumps.
    2. JUMP COMBINATION: The perfect execution of the two jumps in relation to the difficulty of the jumps.
    3. SPINS: Strong and well controlled rotation, number of rotations in the required position, speed of rotation (in fast spins), centering of the spin. In flying spins the height of the jump and the position in the air and landing.
    4. STEP SEQUENCES: the difficulty of the steps used, the swing, carriage and smooth flow of the movement in conformity with the character and the rhythm of the music.
    5. DIFFICULTY OF THE CONNECTING STEPS
    6. SPEED
  2. PRESENTATION: In marking the “presentation” of the program the following must be considered:
    1. Harmonious composition of the program as a whole and its conformity with the music chosen.
    2. Difficulty of the connecting steps.
    3. Variation of speed.
    4. Utilization of the ice surface and space.
    5. Easy movement and sureness in time to the music.
    6. Carriage and style.
    7. Originality.
    8. Expression of the character of the music.

 

1.2 FAILURE IN AN ELEMENT IN THE SINGLES SHORT PROGRAM

Every failure in the required element must be reflected only in the first mark according to the importance of the element failed or omitted and the gravity of the mistake itself, since there is no direct relationship between the first and second mark. However, marks must be deducted from the second mark if the harmonious and artistic aspects of the program are involved. An element is omitted when it is not tried; the jump combination is omitted when neither of the two jumps has been attempted.

In the single short program deductions must be made according to the following scale:

1.3 ONE-BY-ONE DEDUCTION

DEDUCTIONS FOR EXCESSIVE NUMBER OF ELEMENTS OR LESS THAN THE MINIMUM NUMBER OF
ELEMENTS: When an excessive number of any element or less than the minimum number required, as well as lack of connecting steps and other comparable free skating movements between the various elements are present in a Juvenile, Pre-Novice, Novice, Junior or Senior Free Program, the judges must penalize the skater 0.2 for each extra or lacking element since this is against the objective of a well-balanced program.


1.4 MARKING OF THE FREE SKATING PROGRAM IN SINGLES

  1. TECHNICAL MERIT:
    1. DIFFICULTY: Relative standards of difficulty shall be applied to the program as a whole, and not merely to such obvious highlights as jumps with many rotations (singly or in sequence) and combinations of spins. A program planned to permit the skater to gather speed without visible effort (through dance steps etc.) shall be given a higher rating than a similar program which employs running steps and extreme pushing movements. A program with smooth and harmonious transitions shall receive higher marks than a similar program with laboured transitions. Difficulty shall be disregarded where the attempted move is obviously beyond the skater’s ability.
    2. VARIETY: Variety shall include different types of edges, turns, dance steps, spirals, spins, jumps, accentuation of the beat, changes of pace, of degree of lean, of rhythm, and surprise moves. The use of many different jumps and spins does not in itself constitute variety. If the free skating elements are repetitive the full value of the element repeated shall not be awarded in the marks for technical merit. This of course does not apply to combinations. The program is superior when it contains a well balanced number of steps, jumps and spins. A program which is composed predominantly of only one or two of these components shall be considered inferior.
    3. CLEANNESS AND SURENESS: The program is superior when the skater does not attempt movements beyond his ability. In the case of jumps (including toe jumps) special attention must be paid to a clean spring from a true edge and to a clean landing. Any jump commenced or landed on two feet must be penalized in the marking. In the case of spins special attention must be paid to a beginning which has smooth, strong and well controlled rotation, required number of revolutions, speed of rotation, centering of the spin and a controlled and pleasing finish. In flying spins, the height of the jump and the position in the air and landing must be considered. Particular attention shall be paid to glide and linking movements.

  2. PRESENTATION:
    1. HARMONIOUS COMPOSITION AND CONFORMITY WITH THE MUSIC: A program planned and skated in time to the music shall receive a higher rating than a similar program to which the music is incidental. Successive parts of the program shall be linked together logically and naturally in an interesting and varied manner and the program as a whole shall be in conformity with the music chosen. It shall not give the impression of being a succession of isolated special moves. In pair and group skating the accurate performance in unison by the skaters shall be especially considered in marking the Presentation.
    2. VARIATION OF SPEED
    3. UTILIZATION OF ICE SURFACE AND SPACE: A program shall take advantage of the whole skating surface and highlights shall be placed in varying locations, rather than concentrated in one area.
    4. EASY MOVEMENT AND SURENESS IN TIME TO THE MUSIC: Everything angular, violent or stiff shall be avoided. The impression shall be given that the entire program is executed with ease. The high points in the program should be placed to coincide with the high points in the music. Rhythm and easy movements to the music shall be observed.

    7. EXPRESSION OF THE CHARACTER OF THE MUSIC.
